OEM solutions

OEM pressure analysers

Cylinder pressure analysers and their software, developed to specification or supplied under the customer’s own brand, together with the development of acoustic emission sensors.

Scope

The complete measurement chain, or a single element of it

DS Engineering develops cylinder pressure analysers for diesel engines as OEM solutions. Engagements range from an existing instrument supplied under the customer’s name, through the modification of existing equipment, to the development of a complete instrument and software package. The DieselScope and DS Compact instruments form the basis.

This is not limited to the pressure and acoustic emission measurement described elsewhere on this site. An enquiry for an instrument built around a different measured quantity is welcome: the same hardware, firmware, desktop and cloud capability applies regardless of the sensing technology involved.

Because sensor development, embedded software and cloud infrastructure are held within the same organisation, a development programme does not require coordination between separate suppliers for each element of the chain.

Pricing is quoted against the specification rather than taken from a list. A short production series or a single variant is therefore commercially viable, where a larger manufacturer would be likely to decline it.

This is established work rather than a new line of business. Portable analysers and fleet software developed by DS Engineering are in service under other suppliers’ brands, and the platforms described under software development are of the same origin. Client names are held in confidence.

Capability

What can be developed

Each element below can be supplied individually or as part of a complete package.

Programme Scope
Rebrand Existing instrument under the customer’s name, with their reference data and firmware configuration
Hardware variant Modified enclosure, altered sensor fit or connectors, with the measurement chain unchanged
New instrument Developed entirely to the customer’s specification, hardware and firmware

01 — Hardware

Instrument and sensors

Analyser hardware designed to the specified measurement range, accuracy and operating environment. Acoustic emission sensors are developed to specification as our own product; cylinder pressure measurement is implemented using Kistler transducers selected for the application. Other sensing technologies are considered case by case, where an application calls for a measured quantity outside these two.

02 — Firmware

Embedded software

Acquisition, timing and signal processing within the instrument, including the referencing method appropriate to the engine types concerned.

03 — Application

Desktop software

Analysis and reporting software, presented under the customer’s brand where required, with the calculation set and reference values specified by the customer.

04 — Infrastructure

Cloud platform

Data transfer, storage and fleet-level reporting, including integration with the customer’s existing systems where this forms part of the specification.

Acoustic emission

Acoustic sensor development

Acoustic emission sensors are designed and produced by DS Engineering. Development continues, both for the DS Acoustic extension to DieselScope and for sensors adapted to a customer’s engines and the fault conditions to be detected.

An acoustic emission sensor records structure-borne events and the crank angle at which each one occurs. That angle is the diagnostic value: an event occurring at an incorrect point in the cycle identifies the fault directly, where the pressure diagram would show only its consequence, or nothing at all.

Because the sensor is our own design, its characteristics and its mounting can be adapted to the engine types concerned, and it can be supplied as part of an OEM instrument programme. The recorded signal is processed by the same firmware and software that handle cylinder pressure, so both measurements are presented against the same crank angle reference.

Events identified

  • Injector needle movement and seating
  • Injection timing deviation against reference values
  • Injector leakage
  • Late burning of fuel in the cylinder
  • Fuel pump spill
  • Gas flow past the exhaust valve, indicating leakage

The present sensor is described under products.

Process

How a programme proceeds

  1. Enquiry

Intended application, engine types, measurement requirements and anticipated quantities established.

  2. Specification

Technical specification and commercial terms agreed in writing before development begins.

  3. Development

Hardware, firmware and software developed and tested against the agreed specification.

  4. Supply and support

Series supply with documented test results, and continued support arrangements as agreed.

Enquiries

Please provide the engine types concerned, the measurement or development requirement, and any existing equipment in use. This includes proposals for instruments outside pressure and acoustic emission measurement. A response will follow with scope, timing and price.
