Repair, calibration and analysis

Workshop repair and calibration of DieselScope, Electronic Indicator and older COMPAC instruments and their sensors, and the interpretation of measurement data.

Workshop

Repair and calibration

Portable performance analysers and their pressure sensors are repaired and calibrated at our premises in Varna. Turnaround is normally 10 to 15 working days from receipt, and repair work carries a six-month warranty.

Instruments repaired

Instrument Type Workshop service
DieselScope Portable performance analyser Repair and calibration
Electronic Indicator (now DS Compact) Mini indicator Repair and calibration
Older COMPAC instruments Earlier analysers and indicators Confirmed on enquiry, by model

Product names are used solely to identify the instruments serviced, and remain the property of their respective owners.

Service and repair

Fault diagnosis and repair of the instruments listed above and their sensors. They are supported throughout their service life, including units supplied many years ago, so that an installed fleet is not left without support on account of the age of its equipment. Serviced equipment is returned with documented test results and a six-month warranty on the repair.

  • Turnaround 10–15 working days from receipt
  • Six-month warranty on repair work
  • Shipping to and from Varna arranged by the customer

For a repair enquiry, please state the model and serial number of the instrument and describe the fault observed.

Repair of the instruments listed above is a standard service. Other devices are considered case by case, on enquiry. Measurement data from any instrument is accepted for analysis.

Calibration

Two distinct procedures are applied, as a sensor and an instrument are subject to different modes of failure.

  • Pressure sensors are calibrated on a pressure rig against a reference sensor of 0.01% error, at room temperature.
  • Analysers are checked against a charge calibrator, which injects a known charge so the measuring chain can be verified independently of any sensor.

A calibration record is issued with the work. A two-year interval is recommended for sensors in regular service.

In practice, these sensors retain their calibration over long periods. Instruments have been received after ten years in service showing no measurable change in pressure sensitivity. Recalibration is therefore better understood as verification — establishing that a measurement can be relied upon — than as correction of a drift that rarely occurs in practice.

DS Engineering does not hold ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Where a classification society, flag administration or contract requires accredited calibration specifically, that must be obtained from an accredited laboratory. For routine recalibration, intended to confirm that an instrument continues to read correctly, the service described here is the normal arrangement.

Traceability of the pressure-rig reference and the charge calibrator to national standards is currently being established through the Bulgarian Institute of Metrology; certification will be confirmed once issued.

Analysis

Data analysis and diagnostics

Where measurements have already been taken, DS Engineering undertakes the analysis and issues the report. Attendance on board is not required: measurement data is submitted electronically and assessed off-site.

Scope of assessment

  • Cylinder load balance, with identification of cylinders operating outside the intended range
  • Injection timing deviation relative to engine builder reference values
  • Compression loss and its distribution across the engine
  • Comparison against previous measurement sets, where available
  • A specific recommendation for adjustment, further investigation or overhaul

Records are submitted by email or through DS Cloud. The DS Engineering measurement format is deliberately compact, so that a record can be sent from a vessel with limited connectivity without special arrangement. Exports from other manufacturers’ analysers are accepted equally, so that a fleet using another manufacturer’s instruments is able to use the service. The format should be confirmed at the time of enquiry.

Findings are issued per cylinder in a written report within two weeks of receipt. Raw data exports are not considered a deliverable.

Analysis is quoted on request. Engine count, record volume and reporting requirements vary to such an extent that a single published figure would not be representative. Once the details are provided, a quotation follows with the scope confirmed in writing.

Standards

Documentation of every engagement

The same procedure applies to workshop repair, calibration and data analysis.

  1. Scope agreed

Equipment, deliverables, timing and price confirmed in writing before work commences.

  2. Work carried out

Performed against calibrated references, with conditions and results recorded throughout.

  3. Results reported

Findings issued in written form, with deviation from reference stated and a recommended action given.

  4. Test and warranty protocol

Documented test results issued on completion, and a six-month warranty on repair work performed.

Enquiries

Please provide the engine types concerned, the measurement or development requirement, and any existing equipment in use. This includes proposals for instruments outside pressure and acoustic emission measurement. A response will follow with scope, timing and price.
